Our Story
The charity has been operating for over 5 years now but for many years before that Carmen has been rescuing horses and animals without the support of donations or sponsors. Setting up the charity was the natural next step to increasing the number of animals that could be rescued and protected. This has taken a lot of work and many a challenge has been overcome to get to where we are now. Our work is far from complete but we are learning every day and constantly looking for ways to improve and expand our project whilst sticking to our core values regarding horse welfare and care.
We believe that strong and healthy horses are equipped to live outdoors as a herd all year round as long as suitable land with fresh water supply and shelter are available.
Our older horses are rugged during the winter and we believe that closing a horse inside is something that they don’t need or like. Space, company and freedom are essential!

Where
We are located on the outskirts of Regional natural park of Gredos, between the provinces of Avila and Salamanca. We have the River Tormes nearby, the Gredos mountains and the well known Valle del Jerte. It is a sparsely populated and unspoiled farming area, with a large variety of flora and fauna to be enjoyed and nurtured within these ancient lands.
We are in a small village close to the town of Barco de Avila. We have various rented fields and mountain land for the horses to graze and live on totalling around 80 hectares where they live in different groups and move around depending on the pasture, season and water available.
